HOLLY ANDRES

b. Missoula, Montana, 1977

Holly Andres uses photography to examine the complexities of childhood, the fleeting nature of memory, and female introspection. Typically her images rely on a tension between an apparently approachable subject matter and a darker, sometimes disturbing subtext. She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Seattle, Istanbul, Turkey, and Portland Oregon where she lives and works. Her work has been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Time, The New Yorker, Art in America, Artforum, Exit Magazine, Art News, Modern Painters, Oprah Magazine, W, The LA Times, Glamour, Blink, andArt Ltd. – which profiled her as one of 15 emerging West Coast artists under the age of 35.

Andres’s major museum exhibition, The Homecoming, featuring dozens of photographs created over the last decade first premiered at The Hallie Ford Museum in Salem, OR in 2013. She has subsequently shown the body of work at The Photo Center Northwest in Seattle, Wa, and at The Missoula Art Museum in MT.

We have chosen to feature Holly's narrative series, The Summer of the Hornets. A grouping of narrative images strong enough to hold their own in their singularity but pull you in even further with their connectivity and oddities. The bright color palette juxtaposed with the staidness of the storyline highlights the intrigue. It is both relatable & alluring yet dramatic & peculiar at the same time.

THE SUMMER OF THE HORNETS This series illustrates a story of two young sisters lured by a hornet's nest found in the woods behind their house and the traumatic consequences of their discovery. The premise of this project is loosely based on a real-life account in which my sister was horribly attacked when a hornet’s nest was disrupted. Frozen with fear she was stung over one hundred times. My sister, who survived the attack, and her family are portrayed as the characters in the series.
