M. Apparition

I am a conceptual/experimental/ abstract photographer, currently destroying c-paper and constructing homes, or the memory thereof.
Born and raised in New York, I studied photography at Fakulta Akademie Múzických Umění (FAMU), Prague, Czech Republic and the International Center of Photography, New York, NY. Most recently, work was in the 13th Annual National Alternative Processes Competition, at the Soho Photo Gallery, New York. Upcoming shows (Nov. 2017)  include "Shaping Light", Florence, Italy, and "Photography + Science", Yixian Photography Festival, China.

My work is about trusting what isn't yet known. Using experimental processes, the images resonate beyond my consciousness. The viewers are invited to project their own associations onto the work, engaging in the pleasures of discovery and surrender.

"a work of art ...is always completed by the viewer and is never seen the same way by any two persons."   --David Smith

Nest
A nest means security, comfort; one's first home. Just as any home can crumble, some of the Nests are broken: the safety of home -- as it should be -- as opposed to the the realization that "home" is extremely vulnerable. This dichotomy is evinced in the unique prints: the flawless gloss of the black c-paper and the destruction necessary to realize these images.

A note on the process: exposed and developed c-paper is treated with corrosive chemicals, stripping the emulsion down to its components -- the layers of color that make up chromogenic paper. In raking light, the prints appear etched.
I am not in complete control of this process.

Nest (memory)
With time, all that remains of the nest is the memory. For some, memories are of a home both warm and loving; for others, these recollections are painful. Experiences are forgotten or subconsciously altered. The variety of memory is echoed in the wide variety of prints in this series.

The destruction of the flawless, mirror-like black surface of the paper is a tactile record of the experimental process. In some prints, the surface is stripped down, exposing glimpses of the colors that make up chromogenic paper. As the vantage point of the viewer changes, so does the appearance of the print. Whorls appear and disappear, tones (bronze, green) emerge, fields literally sparkle -- this is the crystallization of the chemistry. These shifts are solely the reaction of the corrosive chemicals to the c-paper, a variation outside of my direct control.

While emerging out of the Nest series, Nest (memory) also stands as its own body of work.
